Childline records 23% spike in calls during first month of lockdown

A local child focused organization, Childline Zimbabwe, says its call centres across the country received over 95 000 calls during the lockdown month of April.

In a statement Childline the organization said the calls increased by 23%, attributing them to children being confined indoors and needing someone to talk to.

Childline Zimbabwe Humanitarian and Knowledge manager, Herzel Mukandi revealed that 41% of the cases received were sexual violence cases, most of which related to girls.

He further revealed that Manicaland received the highest number of cases at 19% followed by Masvingo and Harare.
