Manicaland has recorded a surge of school drop outs with over 415 girls in four districts having dropped out of exam classes after the covid-19 lockdown due to marriage and pregnancy.
In an interview with Diamond FM, Manicaland Provincial Education Director Mr Edward Shumba said the scourge calls for intensified guidance and counselling in schools, further urging parents to give their children a second chance to education.
Meanwhile, provincial development officer in the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Mr Munyaradzi Rubaya said schools have to accommodate these girls to ensure their continued learning.
Only five boys dropped out of school for marriage reasons in the province.
