Farmers in Manicaland have expressed concern over shortages of sunflower seed, which they say has reduced the their potential to contribute to oil production and boost economic growth.

Agritex agronomist, Mr Thomas Sakuhuni said most farmers want to adopt the crop for 2018/19 cropping season yet agro-dealers are failing to avail enough seeds.

He added that the department would like farmers to increase sunflower production to reduce importation of basic commodities such as cooking oil.

Government has mobilised funding to roll out massive production of oilseed crops to meet local oil needs within four years.
