The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural development says a new Birchenough bridge is on the cards.
Provincial roads engineer Atherton Zindoga said they are in the process of applying for a grant to construct a parallel bridge at Birchenough Bridge from a Japanese firm.
Engineer Zindoga added that the new bridge will cost an estimated 45 million dollars whilst repairing the old bridge will cost an estimated 40 million dollars.
The current bridge has a weight limit of 25 tones and vehicles are using the Tanganda-Ngundu route which is longer as the bridge can no longer carry heavier loads.
