The Ministry of Health and Child Care with support from Unit Aid is set to introduce a new cartridge to the Gene Xpert machine with improved sensitivity for diagnosis of TB in children, with Chipinge district being one of the target areas for the pilot project.

Unit Aid representative Dr. Tichaona Nyamundaya told Diamond FM that children with TB are often misdiagnosed and end up being treated for other illnesses like pneumonia and malnutrition while the TB disease advances, hence the need for the Xpert Ultra machine which will be set up at Chipinge district and St Peter’s mission hospitals.

He added that there is also need to train doctors in pediatric TB management.
