Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) chief director Professor Obert Jiri says they haven’t recorded any fire incidents in all the winter wheat plantations across the country. Professor Jiri implored farmers to continue being on the lookout and have adequate fireguards and firefighting equipment so as to avoid losing their harvest to veld fires this harvesting season. He further emphasized the need for traditional leaders to activate village fire committees at the ward and village level in the event there is an outbreak of veld fires, they are quickly put out. At least 200 hectares of wheat were destroyed by veld fires countrywide last season, leaving farmers and the nation at large counting losses.
