Forestry Commision in Manicaland has called on tobacco farmers to collect tree seedlings to plant for tobacco curing firewood. Provincial Forestry Extension Manager Mr Philip Tomu says that the tobbbaco wood energy program is in line with the fight against deforestation highlighting they have established centers in Murambinda, Watsomba, Nyamasinga, Nyamajura and Rukweza High School were farmers can go and collect the trees. He further warned that farmers caught in possession of indigenous firewood will be fined as they will be working with ZRP to arrest violators of the Forestry Act. Tobacco curing contributes 15 % of the deforestation rate in Zimbabwe.
